In an important step forward for the Batlow rail trail, Snowy Valleys Council voted at its December 2023 meeting to support the first proposed section from Batlow to Wybalena and to seek a lease on the stage 1 rail corridor from Transport NSW.
The council voted to name the trail the “Batlow Cider Rail Trail” and to establish the Batlow Cider Rail Trail Steering Committee to continue detailed trail planning.
The disused Batlow railway corridor has long been regarded as a great rail trail opportunity in regional New South Wales. Batlow is situated on the western edge of the Great Dividing Range and is one of NSW’s great apple orchard districts. Stage 1 to Wybalena will be a rail trail going north from the Batlow station site to the apple orchards and sellers at the top of the descent to the picturesque Gilmore Valley.
Rail Trails Australia acknowledges Snowy Valleys Council’s support for stage 1.
