Riders and walkers on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail are enjoying yet another new bridge over one of the difficult-to-traverse gullies between Coominya and Esk. Only five months ago the trail managers, Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR), completed the replacement of a derelict bridge over Logan Creek, 10km from Coominya. The crew responsible for that job began work almost immediately on another ageing bridge at Black Snake Gully, which is about 10km further north and just 5km from Esk.
This bridge was completed to the same high standard but without having to replace all the timber. The team were able to use five of the existing piles and two of the old sill beams that sit atop the piles. In addition, some timber was recycled from the replacement of Six Mile Bridge at Pomona in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.
The project started was completed in mid-October, after only 11 weeks – a remarkable time frame! The construction crew stayed at nearby Esk Caravan Park and up-skilled younger team members in areas of demolition and plant operation. As well, some of the team were completing their Cert III in Civil Engineering. Considering the number of derelict bridges on rail trails in Queensland it looks like the team is acquiring niche experience and skills that will be essential for further reconstructions.
The restored bridge sits 7m above the creek bed and the timber decking is 36m long. The existing concrete path that wends its way beneath the bridge has been maintained for horse riders. Significant stabilisation works and revegetation plantings have been completed as part of the reconstruction. Well done, DTMR!
