A missing link in the Mornington Peninsula’s trail network will soon be plugged, allowing walkers and cyclists to travel 26km from Frankston, in Melbourne’s outer southern suburbs, to Bittern, largely on railside shared paths. The existing Frankston – Baxter Trail currently finishes on the Frankston council boundary at Golf Links Rd, 1.1km short of downtown Baxter and 4.6km from the start of the Western Port Bay Trail at Somerville. As part of the transformational Peninsula Trails project, which aims to create 170km of shared trails across the region, the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has completed the design of a high-quality shared-user path with a 100m boardwalk near Somerville and a meandering section along therailway reserve. The $7 million project has involved extensive consultation with Stony Point Line operator Metro Trains and the Department of Transport & Planning to ensure access for railway maintenance vehicles and safety for trail users. The contract, largely funded by the Victorian state government, includes a signalised pedestrian crossing on a curve in Frankston-Flinders Rd at Hawkins Rd that will be synchronised with the level-crossing lights. Construction is expected to start early next year. When completed, the shared path will allow walkers and cyclists to travel to towns as far as Bittern and then return to Frankston on the Sprinter service (subject to space for bikes). Meanwhile, the remaining 10 missing sections of the Peninsula Trails project in the latest master plan, including the prioritised Moorooduc to Mornington section of the Mornington Railside Trail, will be released for community consultation this summer, with more details on all the proposed routes.
